Committee Reports

Eastern Baptist Association

May 1874
Second Annual Session
Foreign Missions

The Committee of Foreign Missions report the following:

That whereas there is great destitution in foreign fields, and that the number of laborers is not equal to the demand for the preaching of the Word of God,

Therefore, RESOLVED, That we support those who are laboring in heathen lands, both with our prayers and money. We recommend that each church take up a collection at least once in three months for that purpose.

[Wm. Moore, J.C. Brown and David Wills ~ Foreign Mission Committee]

After discussion by Garrett, Moore, Cook, Rees, Brown and Bonner the report was received and adopted.

HOME MISSIONS

The Committee on Home Missions made the following report:

That while the commission to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature, is binding on the whole church, yet, today to preach the Gospel to the destitute of America, and especially to the destitute on the Pacific Slope, is demanding the earnest attention and efforts of Christians. But to see that the Gospel is faithfully preached in the bounds of our own Association, among our own families and neighbors, is our imperative duty. And this cannot be done by our missionary alone, but by our farmers and business men, who should, with their means, support the preaching of the Gospel, and thus share the rewards of giving the Gospel to the destitute.

[Elder C.W. Rees, T.H. Garrett and L.E. Henderson ~ Home Missions Committee]

The report was received and adopted.

PUBLICATIONS

The Committee on Publications made the following report:

Whereas the Press, sending out its thousands of books, papers and tracts, has become a great power in the world for good or ill, for weal or woe in these last days,

Therefore, RESOLVED, That as an Association, we most earnestly recommend each of our churches and ministers to send to B. Griffith, 530 Arch Street, Philadelphia, Penn. and supply themselves with the books, Tracts and Papers from our Baptist Publication Society, or the Baptist Publication House of Memphis, Ten. But above all we most earnestly recommend each Baptist family in our bounds, to supply themselves with the PACIFIC BAPTIST, our organ for the Pacific Coast, by sending three dollars to 409 Washington Street, San Francisco.

We further state that we are highly pleased with the noble stand this paper has lately taken in holding up to the world BAPTIST principles and putting down schismatic councils.

[Elder C.W. Rees, L.E. Henderson and T.H. Garrett ~ Baptist Publications Committee]

After considerable discussion by Elder C.W. Rees, Deacon T.H. Garrett, Wm. Moore, Bro. Henderson, Elder Bonner, J.C. Brown, J.R. Cook, the report was adopted.
